Cape Sounion: The Temple of Poseidon at Sunset
A marble temple on a cliff above the Aegean — the easiest, most rewarding half-day trip from Athens.
Of all the day trips from Athens, Sounion is the easiest to justify: an hour's drive along the coast to a Doric temple perched on a cliff edge, with nothing but the Aegean below it in three directions. Lord Byron carved his name into one of the columns in 1810 — still visible, and still, technically, vandalism, so please don't follow his example.
The Temple of Poseidon
Built in the 5th century BC — the same building boom that produced the Parthenon — the temple honored Poseidon in his role as protector of sailors, positioned at the southernmost tip of Attica where ships heading to and from Athens would have seen it for centuries. Sixteen of the original 34 columns still stand.
Why sunset is worth planning around
The site is dramatic at any hour, but it earns its reputation at sunset, when the marble turns gold and the temple silhouettes against the sea. It gets busy for exactly this reason — arrive with enough time to find a good spot before the light peaks.
Getting there
- KTEL bus — direct services run from Athens along the coast road, a scenic ride in its own right.
- Guided half-day tour — usually timed specifically to arrive for sunset.
- Rental car / taxi — the coast road (via Vouliagmeni and Lagonisi) is a pleasant drive with beach stops possible on the way.
Combine it with
The Athens Riviera beaches en route make an easy add-on if you're driving — Vouliagmeni and Lagonisi are the best-known stretches.
