Thiseio: Athens' Best Sunset Walk
A pedestrianized promenade with the Acropolis on one side and café tables on the other — locals' favorite way to end a day.
Thiseio takes its name from an old (and technically mistaken) belief that the Temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora below it was dedicated to the hero Theseus. Whatever the naming mix-up, the neighborhood built around that misnomer has become one of the most pleasant places in Athens simply to walk — a wide, car-free pedestrian promenade tracing the base of the Acropolis, lined with café tables that fill up every evening as the light turns gold on the rock above.
The pedestrian promenade
This walkway (part of a larger unified pedestrian route connecting Thiseio to the Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki) is arguably the single best short walk in Athens for a first-time visitor — flat, traffic-free, and delivering a constantly changing view of the Acropolis rock without a ticket or a climb. It's especially good in the hour before sunset.
What to do here
- Café-hop along the promenade — the terraces facing the Acropolis are some of the most-photographed café tables in the city, and worth the slightly higher price for the view.
- Thiseio open-air cinema — a much-loved summer institution, screening films with the Acropolis visible above the screen; check seasonal listings if you're visiting May–September.

Thiseio connects directly to Gazi to the west for an evening that runs from sunset drinks into nightlife, or to Monastiraki and Plaka to the east along the same pedestrian route.
